Training, teaching and sale of Icelandic Horses

Vibeke Thoresen, a graduate of Holar University, has built a career working with stables and breeding farms across Iceland, Norway, and Canada. Specializing in offering riding lessons, hosting clinics, and training horses, both in Iceland and internationally.

Life before Iceland

Before moving to Iceland, I grew up in Norway, where my passion for horses started at a young age. I focused primarily on training racing horses and show jumpers, with a short introduction to liberty work. A key turning point in my journey was working with the Gulliksen family, renowned Olympic show jumpers, where I learned invaluable lessons that still influence my horsemanship today.

Moving to Iceland

In 2015, I moved to Iceland and began working at Lundar Horse Breeding, where I also enrolled at Holar University. This journey led to earning my bachelor’s degree as a Riding Instructor C/FEIF Level 3 in 2020.
These experiences have provided me with a solid foundation in equine behavior, training methods, and the importance of horse welfare. Working at Þúfur Icelandic Horse Center with professionals like Mette Mannseth and Gísli Gíslason further expanded my knowledge and helped refine my training techniques. Currently, I’m a riding instructor at Hestaland, where I continue to learn from Guðmar Þór Pétursson and collaborate on his online educational projects.

Additionally, I am in the process of completing my Master's Degree in Equine Science at the Agricultural University of Iceland, with most of the coursework and thesis finished. This program has given me valuable insights into evidence-based practices and equine welfare, which I am excited to incorporate into my role as a riding instructor.

Pursuing my dream

My approach to training and instruction is grounded in a commitment improve the relationship between horse and rider, prioritizing their well-being and ensuring a positive and fulfilling experience for both. By integrating learning theory and accessible methodologies, I aim to empower riders to develop a deeper understanding of their equine partners, ultimately cultivating a community of happy and successful athletes.

Today, I’m fortunate to travel the world, holding clinics and sharing my passion and knowledge with fellow Icelandic Horse enthusiasts.
